Full Installer:

The current release of Stu’s Quiz Boxes is v5.0.0.0 – released on Tuesday 1 October 2013. It is available as a single complete download installer file called QuizBoxesSetup.exe and is 19.2MB in size. Click one of the download buttons below and when prompted, save this QuizBoxesSetup.exe file onto your Desktop or into a Downloads folder and then run it.  If you wish to install it to your C: drive, you should be logged on as an Administrator or equivalent. But this version can be installed to a USB stick or any path you have write access to, even if you are not an Administrator of the PC.

QBDownload-250

Installation Help:

Q: Is Stu’s Quiz Boxes really totally free?
A: Yes. And No. The software is free. There are no ads or nasties associated with it at all. BUT: If you use Stu’s Quiz Boxes and you create a good quiz file, I want you to share your quiz with the world.

Q: Are there any tricks to installing Stu’s Quiz Boxes?
A: With v3.3 and later, there are NO Windows support files (DLLs etc) that need to be installed or registered – UNLESS you are running on Windows 8. Only if you wish to install Stu’s Quiz Boxes into a protected folder in Windows like Program Files will you need to be logged onto your Windows PC as an administrator or equivalent. Other than that, just download QuizBoxesSetup.exe, run it and select the folder you’d like to install it into. A shortcut will appear on the Desktop when installation is complete. You can even install it to a USB stick and run it from there, making it totally portable.

Q: I have Windows 8 or 10. What do I need to make Stu’s Quiz Boxes work?
A: We have released a libraries fix for Windows 8 and 10 64-bit computers to allow QuizBoxes to run.

Please download the following program:

http://stuhasic.com/win8lib64/win8lib64setup.exe

You need to be logged onto your PC as an administrator, then right-click on the program you downloaded and choose Run as Administrator. A status bar will flash up on the screen, then disappear. When complete, try running QuizBoxes from the QuizBoxes folder.  It should work fine.

Q: Can you run Stu’s Quiz Boxes from a Fileserver, on multiple PCs?
A: Yes you can! When you run QuizBoxesSetup.exe, select the server folder path (the share) you’d like to install to. Then on each computer, run the SetupShortcut.exe that you’ll find in the QuizBoxesfolder to place a shortcut on the Desktop. You do NOT need to be logged on as an administrator to run SetupShortcut.exe. Multiple PCs can run the same or different Quiz Boxes games at the same time in this configuration. You can even edit multiple quiz files at the same time.

Q: In a server-based installation, can you make it so certain users cannot modify question files?
A: Yes. As long as your server allows for different groups with different security levels, you can give all users Read-only access to the whole QuizBoxes folder structure, and give a QuizBoxesEditors (for example) group write/modify access to the QuizBoxes\quizzes and QuizBoxes\skins folders.

Is it possible to modify the number of squares in the game board? Cos sometimes we may wanna play a quick game in the last 5 or 10 mins of the lesson.

16 09 2007

[Original response]
Unfortunately, it’s not possible. 30 questions make a game.

[UPDATED response]
YES! As from release 3.10 of Stu’s Double Jeopardy, you can choose to play the full 30 question game, or a cut-down 20 or even 10 question game!

Hi Ron,

This means that you are not lgged on as a local administrator and you may need help from your network admin person.

To verify, try double-clicking the time in the bottom-right hand corner of your Windows screen. If you get an error, you’re not an admin.

Hi Stu,

I’m trying to set this up on my own personal PC. I’m the only user (admin) but the program keeps telling me I’m not logged in as an admin. ??? Since I only have 1 login (an admin account), I can’t figure out where I’m going wrong. I’m using Windows Vista if that helps.

I’m trying to set up a quiz for a speech class (don’t ask! :)) I have to kill 20 minutes and have something that interacts with the audience. Jeopardy was the first thing that came to mind…

Thanks, Gregg

jeopardygame

Hi Gregg,

Jeopardy does indeed work on Vista, but to install it, you need to turn off User Access Control which for some reason wants to block installation. Here are some simple steps for doing this:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/

After it’s installed, you can turn it back on, but it’s a very annoying feature. Please let us know how you go.

Developer

Question: Did you need the permission of Jeopardy! (the trademark) to use the trademark name for this application – I suppose not since this is shareware and does not use exactly the same method, but what if you did monetize, just curious. I realize this is more of a legal question, but if you do know, please email me, vshah10@gmail.com

Thanks!

3 01 2008
paralleldivergence

Hi Developer,

If you have a careful read of the disclaimer at the top-right of the screen, you’ll get most of your answers. This program is freeware, not shareware. If it ever was monetized, it would have to change names, the font used for the scores would have to change and you’d have to change the term “daily double” as a minimum. I respect the rights of the copyright holders of Jeopardy and am only providing this for educational purposes. There is no money being made from this – if you look closely at the site, there are also no ads being displayed here and the software is not supported by adware of any kind. Hope that answers.

The resolution is off when I run this under Parallels on my Mac OSX Leopard. I set the virtual OS to the rec’d resolution, but I think it might be using the host OS resolution anyway.

Hi Charles. Thanks for sending me a snapshot of the problem. I suspect a DPI setting problem in your Windows setup. Try this: Right click your Windows desktop and choose Properties, then open the Settings tab and click Advanced. On the General tab, make sure the DPI setting for display is set to Normal (96 DPI) – not Large (120 DPI). See if that makes a difference. Let me know.

Hello. Im trying to use this program for a group presentation. If i download this on my computer how do I transfer it to the teachers computer?

9 03 2008

Hi Justin,

Use a USB memory stick and copy the entire Jeopardy folder from your PC onto it. Then copy that folder to the other PC. Open the Jeopardy folder on the second PC and double-click the Setup.exe program in there to register the program in Windows. You need to be logged on as a local administrator to run Setup.

Alternatively, install Jeopardy as normal from this website and then just transfer the Quizzes folder.

7 10 2008
jeopardygame

Hi Aaron,

If you get the error immediately after running (i.e. you don’t get the message box and the choice for where to extract to), then I suggest the download was not successful – try downloading again.

If you do get to choose where you want to install to and the error appears after you click Extract, then t’s more than likely a write permission problem with regard to the selected folder. Here’s some questions:

– Did it create the folder you selected?
– Did it put any files in there?
– Are you running Vista Home or something better?

11 03 2010
Kara

I’m getting the same message. “Error Reading Archive” I downloaded it to my desktop and it appears there but when I click to open it a box appears and says “security warning”-Publisher not known. I click that I want to Run it anyway and that’s when the “Error Reading Archive” message comes up. What should I do?
Thanks for your help.

12 03 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Kara.

“Error Reading Archive usually means the download was not successful. Try download from the alternate location. The file should be about 19.2MB in size. Is it? Secondly, it usually expects to install to C:\QuizBoxes. If you are not logged on as an administrator to Windows, you can’t install it there, so you’ll ned to install to a folder you CAN write to.

Hey there, So far this program is great! just curious if you can get the actual sound effects of the jeopardy game? the count down time, buzzer sound, etc.. otherwise, this really helps out in the class. THANKS!

10 10 2008
jeopardygame

Hi 02ws6!

Glad you like the game and can find great uses for it with your class. As for sound effects, the game doesn’t actually incorporate a timer for the question and so has no “thinking music”. Similarly, there are no “buzzers” incorporated in the game, the students can make their own buzzers! Having said that, there are some sound effects that you can change – take a look in the Jeopardy\Sounds folder on your computer and by replacing the MP3 files in there with different sounds (but DON’T change the filenames!), you can totally customize your Jeopardy gameshow.

My wife and I are both teachers and we love using Stu’s Double Jeopardy in our classrooms. My wife teaches science, however, and it would be VERY helpful if she could include subscripts in her questions (think chemical formulas) is it possible to change the text font in some way? If not, might this be an addition in future versions? Thanks again for creating such great free software.

BTW, in response to O2ws6, I downloaded a wav file of the Final Jeopardy music and just attached it to my final Jeopardy question as per the instructions elsewhere on this site. I open the question and click the music file and, voila, authentic Jeopardy music and sound.

28 01 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Adam. I pleased you both like it so much. Stu’s Double Jeopardy questions and answers are restricted to using the Arial font, so you can use any of the characters built into it. In Windows, go Start…Run and type in Charmap then press Enter. Scroll up to Arial and you’ll see all the characters you can use. Some superscripts are there, but no subscripts. In cases where you need something special, why not type your question into Word in a big appropriate font, then capture the screen as an image and crop it. You can then insert an image for the question as per these instructions:

https://jeopardygame.wordpress.com/2008/08/10/include-images-in-your-quizzes-step-by-step/

Hi, I use this game as a revision tool with my Grade 6 class and they love it. Unfortunately we recently got new computers at work and now it won’t work. I removed the program and re-installed it but it still does not work. When I launch the program the right side and bottom of the screen background is white (blank) and then when you select a question the same thing happens and you can’t read the whole question.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Any plans to add jeopardy theme music?

8 09 2009
paralleldivergence

When I made Jeopardy, I didn’t go for creating an identical copy of the TV game show, so I didn’t use their music at all. The sounds folder contains the sounds used in the game, the beeps and boops etc. At present, there is no option for having background music and there is no option for including a question timer. But these aren’t bad suggestions and I may add them into the next version. In the meantime, you could download the Final Jeopardy music as an MP3 file, place it in the same folder as your Quiz, name it JFJ.mp3 and it will play while the final jeopardy question is being answered.

Hey there,

I’m absolutely amazed with this program. As an Education student at University, I can see the endless possibility for this software in the classroom. My problem is that my Anti Virus software (Kaspersky) keeps saying that there is a Trojan embedded in the app. (DLL Corrupted) Malware name: Packed.Win32.Krap.ab Any ideas what this is or why this this is happening?

22 09 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Ryan, I can guarantee that there is no adware, spyware or malware in Stu’s Double Jeopardy or Stu’s Quiz Boxes. I can assure you Kapersky is reporting a false positive. You can submit the file to them for checking if you like: http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=13881 – The program is packed to allow it to be totally portable (ie so it can be run from a USB without needing to run setup, but for some reason, kaspersky weems to think that ALL packed programs are malware. I assure you this program is not.

22 09 2009
Ryan

You are right, I got in contact with Kaspersky and cleared up the issue. I had to adjust some settings. And yes the fact that you can run it from a USB is awesome. I’m using this program as part of a presentation on how you can integrate technology into the classroom. Awesome Work!

I am trying to download your Quiz Boxes but every time I try it tells me:
Gateway Anti-Virus Alert

I have tried everything on your download help site and I have turned off my firewall and nothing works. Any suggestions?

4 01 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Amanda,

Seems the place you are trying to download QuizBoxes from uses SonicWALL which is a firewall service provider (and they are paying quite a bit for it – http://www.firewalls.com/sonicwall/sonicwall-upgrades-software/sonicwall-gateway-anti-virus/ )

I can assure you there is no adware or spyware or malware of any kind in QuizBoxes – check the top download link above at c|net – they have thoroughly checked the software and it’s 100% clean.

SonicWALL is reporting a false positive for some reason. Your choices?

1. Go see the IT Manager at the place you are trying to download it and get them to fix it
2. Download it from an internet connection that is not using SonicWALL.

We played this game in Spanish class today, it was fun! Our teacher made up her own questions and some were really funny. Like this one “How old is the computer teacher ?”. I like these games and you can change them to make them however you want.

That’s great Katelyn, I’m pleased you enjoyed it. Why don’t you ask her if you could create your own quiz and then you could host it for the class? Here are all the instructions. Stu,
Thanks for creating this. I’m using it in my upper level Spanish class.

I was wondering if there is going to be support for non-English characters, and will there ever be a MAC version of this fantastic tool?

Kind Regards,
El Senor Velasquez

7 02 2010
paralleldivergence

Dear El Senor Velasquez, Glad you like it. In answer to your questions, you can use some non-English characters now – run Charmap in Windows, select the font Arial and you can use any of those characters in there (cut/paste). However, the next release in the second half of 2010 will be language independent, localized to most languages.

As for a specific Mac version? Probably not at this stage. Remember, this is free software and redeveloping for a different platform actually costs money. Although, you could always donate if you like it… 🙂

Can this be uploaded to webct for students to play against each other?

20 02 2010

Hi Susan. The game is not really designed to be played with two people against each other. It’s a gameshow that needs a host – usually the teacher, but could easily be a student – and contestants – either individual students (up to 6) or teams of students (up to 6 teams).

Stu!

Very happy with the game. I am still using Stu’s Double Jeopardy v.3.3.0.0 and I have some things I would like you to consider in upcoming versions if you get the chance…

1- Is it possible to have more than 6 teams?
2 – Is it possible to randomly select the team that has ‘control’ over the board as now it seems it will always be the team with the last correct answer.
3- Is it possible to support full-screen play – right now, with my screen resolution, the jeopardy board is always smaller than my (very cluttered) desktop.

Thanks so much!

12 03 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Lise,

1. No. There’s only 30 questions in a game. The more teams, the less opportunity to get in to answer a question.
2. The program “suggests” which team is in control (who picks next), but you’re the quizmaster, you can override. The program doesn’t care who picks.
3. I recommend you move to Stu’s QuizBoxes. All your existing games will work. To make it virtually full screen, drop your screen resolution to 1024×768

12 03 2010
Lise

Hey Stu,

My thoughts on the extra teams is because I allow all teams to answer the questions, everytime, on their individual chalkboards, therefore all teams answer all 30 questions and therefore, the extra accounting availability by allowing more teams would allow me to keep track of the scores of every team.

As far as the ‘you are the quizmaster – you can override’ comment… this isn’t necessarily true, since, if a team is in control from the program’s point of view and then I override and give control to a different team and a daily double is selected then the scoring is all messed up because the wager is wrong and it is based on the wrong team’s score….

Also – on the screen resolution issue… it is a low tech solution that I have been using. I was just suggesting an option that you may want to consider.

Thanks,
Lise

I have created a quiz, and for simplicity I would like to create a shortcut to start that particular quiz.
Can that be done.

For example to start the g7 quiz?

BTW, Great work and thanks so much for sharing! And as for the free thing….Your awesome!

5 04 2010

Hello Stu, Just an idea….

If we could create shortcuts like one below, we could create many folders with pre defined quizzes that our younger kids could run without intervention.

G:\Quiz>QuizBoxes.exe -N “Group of Seven” -S 6×5 -NS n -T 2,Blue,Red -Q g7.txt

-N
Even better 🙂 ….
If you had another file similar to your SetupShortcut.exe file that popped up a dialog asking for the values and then created the shortcut on the desktop…..

Hi Vault Boy.

– Videos are on the wishlist. No plans for question screen background (I picture some really horrible looking backgrounds that people will make and I need to save them from that). MP3 background music for the game may be possible. I’ll think about it. Maybe intro music is all that’s needed.

Hi Efthimia,

1. To change a skin, DOUBLE-click the one you want. (Not sure what you mean by “classic skin” though.
2. No, you cannot change the name of the game. Does Microsoft let you change the name of Windows?
3. To get out of the Question Editor, you click the big red X in the top right hand corner.

Hi Sue,

Unfortunately, DER laptops will not allow you to run software that is not already installed on the laptop. i.e. you can only run what the laptops came with. Nothing I can do about it. You should ask your Regional DER manager to request that QuizBoxes be included on future images. Note that it will only work effectively on the 2010 and later DER laptops. The 2009 ones don’t have a screen with sufficient resolution.

7 07 2010

Thanks. Will find another way using normal laptops at school. Will try to find out who regional DER manager is and make that request. Cheers

Ah, Stu. Love the site, but cannot get the download to work. Using Windows Vista. Is that the issue?

Anyway, Cannot create my own stuff. Help! I would love to create on to try. I teach Spanish and this would be awesome. Shocked that there is no Spanish to look at…….

Ayudame, por favor

Hi Debbie. You need to be more specific. First you say you can’t download, which means you don’t have the program, then you sayyou can’t create your own stuff. What exactly is your problem? QuizBoxes does work with Vista.

OK, let’s see if I can make it clearer. I did download something and now have an ICON on my desktop. When I open it, I get the board asking me to sign in the number of players. My intention is to create my own game, so I’m following the steps in your “Create your own quizzes” section. I cannot locate the quiz boxes editor. There is a box that pops up with quizzes and other options, but they are empty. There is a math and science one that has something, but I didn’t look in them.
I cannot seem to get by these two instructions:
Select an existing quiz file – it doesn’t matter which one
Move your mouse pointer to the top of the Quiz Boxes window and the menu will appear. Select the Quiz Boxes Question Editor.

My computer then locks and I have to shut down. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Debbie

Open one of the existing quizzes. It doesn’t matter which one. When you have the game board showing, move your mouse to the top of the QuizBoxes window to show up the menu. On the top right of the menu is the Exit option, You do not have to shutdown your computer. Question Editor is one of the other options.

QuizBoxes doesn’t seem to run on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. It installs and starts OK, but as soon as I click on anything it quits. Is this expected?

Hi Brent3600. I can confirm that QuizBoxes does work on Win 7 64-bit. I use it myself on my own laptop. See the screenshot here: http://imgur.com/VzaZW.jpg – I am not sure why it’s not working for you, but there is probably an issue with something else you have loaded.

Stu, any thoughts on when the next version will be available for download? Great stuff you have here, by the way. Congratulations!

Hi Bob, I’m currently working on the next version of Student Response Network – http://studentresponsenetwork.com – then I’ll move onto QuizBoxes. These developments are my hobby that I work on in my spare time. My full time job takes up the rest. Glad you like it. 🙂

Hi Carolyn. That sounds like it might be one of the FAQs! 🙂

Hey Su,
Is it possible to encode different type of rounds in the QuizBox. Something like a timed rappid fire round?

Hi Aashish. Sorry, no timers are included.

I downloaded quizboxes and it won’t let me close out of it. Any suggestions?
Also, how do I create my own quizzes with this?

Thanks!

Hi Becca. I don’t think you’ve discovered the menu that pops up when you roll your mouse pointer to the top of the QuizBoxes window…

Hi! Thank you for getting back to me. For some reason, my pc froze up completely – I rebooted and the issue resolved itself. I’ve loaded the program onto a flash drive so I can create games at home. I think this was much easier to use than the ppt files that I’d used for Jeopardy – the kids loved the game – it was a great way for them to review for their test. The best feature is being able to have six teams – that way all the kids are engaged because there are only 3-4 kids on a team and they all have to work together to answer. Usually in Jeopardy, I split the room in half and you get a lot of socializing, with one or two kids getting hit up for answers. Thank you!

This is awesome work Stu! I love how you encourage people if they use it, then they must share it. 🙂 Thank you for sharing it.

That’s FAQ no.1. If your Mac is running Windows, then yes.

Stu, I used your Quiz Boxes game last year for the final exam review and the student’s loved it! However, even after downloading the new download from October, 2013 and the “Windows 8” fix, the game was unusable this year. I plugged the laptop into the overhead projector and first the students could not view all 6 categories. I tried changing the display/resolution attributes several times and but we still were unable to see all 6 categories. Only 5 were visible. When I view the game on my laptop screen, everything looks fine, all 6 categories are visible.
We did try to proceed and this happened: When a category amount was selected (Trace Evidence for $200), the students could not see the entire question on the screen. In addition, after the question partially displayed, I was unable see the command prompts at the bottom to view the correct answer, add points and move to the next question. Everything froze. Help! I can provide a screen shot if you want to see what happened in class.
Robin

Hi Robin. With Windows 8, please make sure that the screen resolution is set to 1024×768. Then go to the Windows Home screen and type DISPLAY, then click on Display Settings and under more options, change the “size of apps, text” from “Default” to Smaller. Then try QB again.

You may have to switch off your virus software to install the Windows 8 libraries. I did – I’m running Panda Free anti-virus!

Thanks Mark. There is absolutely no malware in QuizBoxes or the libraries fix for Win 8.1. Panda and Avira AV (both free) report false positives unfortunately.

I just clicked the blue download button and it downloaded a 19.2MB file called QuizBoxesSetup.exe.

NOTE – for Win 10, you need to also download link at the 3rd FAQ above.
