Hope you learn some new ones with Jeopardy, Nellie!

This is a great program. I noted however that when you have a daily double question, the maximum bid is $9999 despite the instructions stating you could bid more.

Many thanks again for this versatile tool which can be used both for fun and or teaching.

Hi Ces!

Thanks for letting me know that. It’s not common that someone gets over $10K in my one-round of Jeopardy, but I suppose it’s possible. I’ve updated the program to correct this. Version 3.201 and later with allow for Daily Double wagers of up to $99,999. Just download the update file from the Downloads page.

Glad you like the program.

Hi and tx soooo much… what a blast we are having with your tool. I am actually make a family trivia game for next Christmas!!!!

My issue:

when i put in the answer or question, some of the words are being cut off…. any thing i can do about his or am i just typing to many words in the required area?

21 01 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Paddy,

Jeopardy allows pretty long questions and answers, but they aren’t unlimited! Brevity is a good thing. 🙂

Glad you like it.

hey there,
i’m from germany and i like your jeopardy-version!
i’ve one question: is it possible to add a category so that i have maybe 7 or 8 ?

greetings

22 01 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Hans.

It’s based on the standard Jeopardy game which is six categories – and while I do allow you to go smaller to four or even two categories, you can’t go up.

30 questions is a good duration. I’m pleased you like it.

Stu~

Excellent product! Thank you for sharing.

Question: Can you jump to Final Jeopardy at any time or do you have to go through all the questions?

Thank you!

17 02 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Todd,

To get to Final Jeopardy, you have to go through ALL the questions. That’s why they call it Final Jeopardy. 🙂

But, unique to my version, you can choose to play a shorter game before you get to Final Jeopardy – https://jeopardygame.wordpress.com/2008/08/16/jeopardy-v31-introducing-the-quickie/

Dar Stu,

Thanks very much – great software. I am creating a quiz for our non-profit ski club (located at Snoqualmie Pass, WA) as a way to teach new members club history and facts and for entertainment and fun for older members (like me).

Hey,

Is there a way to get jeopardy on my vbulletin? Looks awesome and would be a great way to help people out if I could get in on there some how.

Thanks,

Really not sure what you mean by this Eric. vBulletin is forum software – unless it’s also something else that I don’t know about. Please fill me in with more details.

Eric Russell

Thanks for the response. Basically I have a joomla website and vbulletin. I’d like to get this jeopardy game on my website to help my friends with there certifications. Although I have a website, I know next to nothing about all this stuff. LOL! Just came across your Jeopardy game and wondering if I can somehow get it on my website so my members can learn from it.

Thanks,
Eric

paralleldivergence

Hi Eric. Stu’s Double Jeopardy is a Windows-only application. What you probably want is a web-based product to work in your forum. Here’s one that’s not too bad at all: http://www.superteachertools.com/jeopardy/

27 03 2009
Daniel

on mine it will not go full screen and i am doing a project For school and i need it full-screen

27 03 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Daniel,

Set your screen resolution to 1024 x 768. It will be almost full screen. That is the best you can do.

17 08 2009
Ken

This is a very nice rendition of the game, with easy to use tools to adjust it. It does have two basic flaws (that most people can work around).

1) It’s fixed in position on the screen so you can’t move it around.
2) It does not resize or fill the whole screen.

Oh sure you can go to screen size 1024 x 768 and it looks close to full screen. But anyone with eyes can see it’s not quite there. Amazingly people focus on that. I used it for a team building event and some fun Jeopardy with each team. And several people commented on how nice the tool was and then suggested I expand it to fill the screen or at least center it better. Sigh.

So please, take this wonderful creation and tweak it a bit to improve it so it can move around on the screen and can resize. Beyond that, it’s probably the best version I’ve seen floating around.

17 08 2009
paralleldivergence

Yes Ken, that is on the cards for the next release. Glad you like it otherwise.

17 08 2009
Jen

How do you make the jeopardy game board take up the whole screen. Right now it only takes up part of the screen and you can see all my shortcuts behind it, which will be a distraction/annoyance to many students. Thanks!

17 08 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Jen. At present, you should be running your display at 1024×768. Then the board will be *almost* full screen, but some of the background will still be visible. The next version will fix that, due later in the year.

29 08 2009
Barbara

Love the template. Is there a way to save a classes game that is halfway completed for the next day and retain the score, and questions not answered?
Thanks

30 08 2009

Hi Barbara, At present, no. But it’s a good idea. I’ll add it to the wishlist.

MS

I want to uninstall this and I can’t find it on my add remove programs.

17 09 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi MS. There is no uninstall because Stu’s Double Jeopardy never gets installed in the first place – it’s a portable application, so all you need to do is delete the Jeopardy folder, wherever you placed it.

19 09 2009
Jordan

Hey, love the program. Just wondering if you can make it full screen because I use it with a projector and smartboard and full screen would make it so much more real.

19 09 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Jordan. Set your screen resolution to 1024×768 and the board will fill MOST of the screen. A new version will be released shortly which will blackout the rest of the desktop.

22 09 2009

Hi Ernie. At present, movie files are not supported.

30 09 2009
James

how do you change the values form points to dollars?

30 09 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi James. You don’t. Quiz Boxes is NOT Jeopardy. I have always been uncomfortable with the gambling connotation of the Daily Double and Final Jeopardy using money, especially when the game is used in schools. Quiz Boxes is points only and it won’t be changed.

CharlesAlvear

Hi Stu. Quizbox is great. What file name should I use if I want to include an audio clue in the Final Quiz Breaker question? Actually, what I want to do is have it play the Final Jeopardy theme music as the countdown for the question.

thanks,
Charles

2 10 2009
CharlesAlvear

Disregard my question about the MP3 Quizbreaker question. I found the info in the instructions (missed it the first two times in my read through). Awesome application!!! Keep us posted on the video playback enhancement! 🙂

28 10 2009
Jen N

how do I get the pictures off that are already on the quiz boxes? and the audio?

28 10 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Jen N. Your question is a little hard to understand. What do you mean by “get them off”? You don’t want the picture (or the audio), but just want the text? Work backwards from the instructions for how to put them there in the first place. Check the list of instructions at the top of this page.

28 10 2009
Jen N

yeah see i looked at the instructions and it was hard for me to understand. the thing is, is that i didn’t put these images or audio there in the first place. they were automatically there and having nothing to do with my questions. i was just wondering if there is an easier way.
thanks

28 10 2009
paralleldivergence

OK, if you are opening a quiz file from the quizzes folder where there are other quiz files, there should not be ANY jpg or mp3 files in that folder. Feel free to delete those files. Anyone who makes quizzes with photos or sounds in them should be placing those files and just their quiz file into a spearate folder, appropriately named. Delete the jpg and mp3 files from the quizzes folder and your problem will go away. But you’ll also break someone else’s quiz who save their multimedia quiz in the wrong location – a valuable lesson will be learned.

Hi There,

Is there anyway that you can print off the questions and answers for each quizz?

Cheers

10 11 2009
paralleldivergence

Hi Peter, At present, the Print function has not been enabled. It will be added in a future release. To print your quiz, you can simply open the J-quizfile.txt file you made with Windows Notepad accessory and choose File…Print.

I am having problems with displaying the game, I do not see the players names and $ values so I am able to select them…what am i doing wrong??? I see a white border on bottom and right edges of the game and each box..i am using 1440×900 HELP

8 02 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Frank. Normally your screen resolution should be set to 1024 x 768. I’m guessing you have Large Fonts turned on in Windows display settings. Click on the Display tab, then Advanced and change it to Small Fonts.

Hi Stu,
Is there any way to load video (.avi) clips into the questions?

10 02 2010

Is there any way to set a time limit on how long to allow the students to answer the question? I put the students in groups and give them small white boards. I want to give them about 45 seconds to respond. Is there a built in timer or any way other than my watch to time them?

22 04 2010
paralleldivergence

A timer function will be included in v5, due for release later in the year.

Hi, I have dollar signs on mine even though you said that couldn’t be possible. How do I get them off? I just want point values not dollar values as I am using it in the classroom. Even worse, I’m using it in a classroom in Las Vegas!

1 09 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Lisa, What skin are you using? Some of the older ones on the Skins page do have dollar signs. Just use a different skin.

Steve

Hi – I am a teacher about to try this out for the first time.
Looks fantastic!
One thing I noticed is that the scores for the teams are not visible
until you goto the questions – is that by design?
I thought it might be good to have the scores visible all the time to encourage students to take risks on harder questions.

4 09 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Steve. When I designed the program, I wanted the scores on the main screen, but aesthetically, it was ugly. People will see the score often enough and they know where they are coming in the scheme of things. Also, in the heat of competition, not knowing the score exactly adds to the excitement as scores move back and forward. Hope you enjoy it.

I am trying to use this for a high school Algebra 2 class and I can not get equations to print correctly into the questions. Is there any way I can copy paste from word and it not changing superscripts or copy problems from equation editor?

27 10 2010
paralleldivergence

Hi Michele. You can set your equations in Word, make them nice and large, then capture the screen (Print Screen), paste the image into an image editor like IrfanView or whatever, then crop it to size and save as a JPG file. You can then have your QuizBoxes question as an image, as per these instructions: http://quizboxes.com/2008/08/10/include-images-in-your-quizzes-step-by-step/

10 02 2011

It is a great software. I am at a German university. Me and my friends use the software once in a while to have a little change in our prepartion procedures for the exams.
Unfortunately it does not run very well on netbooks, since the lower part of the screen is just cut off. It would also be nice to pictures for the answers. Thanks again for uploading it!

I have already done 5 catagories of questions. I wish ti delete the sixth catagory but do not know how. HELP!!

4 04 2011
paralleldivergence

There is not option to play a 5 category game only. You can play 6, 4 or 2 before the game moves onto the final QuizBoxes Breaker question. See here – http://quizboxes.com/2008/08/16/jeopardy-v31-introducing-the-quickie/

When I try to save my quiz it automatically saves the quiz and doesn’t let me choose where I want to save it. I can’t get it saved on my flashdrive then to take it to the different schools I teach at. I have no idea what I am doing wrong and I LOVE this! Actually setting up your game is so much easier than anything I have tried before.
Please help!

3 06 2011
paralleldivergence

Hi Diana. If you edit an existing file, it automatically saves in the same folder. If you choose to create a new quiz, it asks you where you want it and what you want it called. Also note that quiz files, which are simple text files can be copied separately and read from anywhere.

2 06 2011

I think I finally got this working. I’m not sure how I did it but if it’s working that’s all that matters!

Wow! I’m not a teacher, but I enjoy making games for fun so my friends and I can play (I’m 11). This is a great program! It’s easy, it barely takes any time, and it’s fun! I have no problems with this program.

8 10 2011
paralleldivergence

I’m really glad you like it Christian. If you have a read of this article, you’ll see I actually designed QuizBoxes to be kid-friendly with the intention of getting students designing and creating their own quizzes to share both at school and outside. http://quizboxes.com/2007/08/16/quiz-making-a-whole-class-activity/

Derek

Hello,

Very much enjoy using your program, however I am currently in a classroom situation where my interactive whiteboard is set as a second screen, and applications have to be physically moved over to the second screen in order to be displayed. I haven’t been able to find a way to move Stu’s Quiz Boxes, so unfortunately my use of the program has drastically decreased. I eagerly await an update where the window of the application can be moved!

Welcome back to the classroom Jan. I’m glad it all went really well. Did you have the students making the quizzes?

I am an educator who creates the majority of the games and activities that I use in my classroom. I want the best of everything for my students and, frankly, I rarely find what I think would be educationally stimulating, appropriate and fun for my classes. However, your Quiz Boxes game is awesome! I love it!!! It is much better than some of the quizzes that are available for a fee. I love the fact that your quiz game is easy to customize. I wish, however, that I could insert video clips and a timer into some of the boxes. Do users have the ability to add these features to the quizzes; or, is that something that would need to be built or coded into the quiz program by you? I apologize if you have already addressed these questions. Thank you for creating a wonderful classroom quiz game. You rock:-)!

20 05 2012
paralleldivergence

Hi Gina. I’m pleased you find QB useful. Currently videos in questions and a built-in timer is not available. In terms of a timer though, you could use a separate timer if you like. I can’t give you an ETA for when they might be included, but they are on the wish-list.

Hi , gretings form Bolivia, i just found your web site and downloaded your software, It is just awsome!. Im planning to use it with the youth on my church, it will be very effective. The question for you is, how difficult will be to add 2 more teams so we can have 8 total. thanks for your good work.

6 04 2013

Hi Boris, glad you like QuizBoxes. Is it difficult to add two more teams? Yes. Six is plenty – especially when it’s free. 😉

21 08 2013
Jason

Hi Stu – I’ve been using your program for a few years now, and my students love it! I have them make up review questions for History and Geography, and they love seeing their own words up on the screen! However, my school board has recently made the switch over to teacher notebooks, and the maximum resolution is 1024 x 600. This resolution cuts off the bottom third of the screen. I’m not very technically literate, so I am hoping you know of a solution. Can the application itself be resized, or am I out of luck? Thanks for your help, and for the great teaching tool!

21 08 2013
paralleldivergence

Good to hear you’re liking it Jason. Unfortunately, the program needs 1024×768 as a minimum. You should be able to achieve that on your computer with an external monitor or projector I’m guessing.

22 08 2013
Jason

Thank you – I’ll have to play around with that!

8 09 2013
Daniel Ramos

I have a netbook. The whole app doesnt fit. How could i make it smaller?

9 09 2013

You can’t. Quizboxes needs 1024×768 resolution as a minimum. Plug in an external monitor and set it to that and it should work fine.

I used quiz boxes last year, but lost the file when my files were transferred between schools. Now when I download the program I can get in to make a game, but the whole image doesn’t fit on the screen and I can’t get out of it–no quit button. Not sure what to do??

Hi, I can create a new quiz and save it, but when I exit the program and then return to open my saved quiz it says ‘The selected Quizboxes question file is not a quizboxes question file’. What am I doing wrong when saving? It’s saved with the original ones which open fine.

21 10 2013
paralleldivergence

Hi Jakii.

Could you please email me the quizboxes quiz file you created?
When you created it in the Question Editor, as long as you clicked the diskette icon at the top and got a check mark on it, it should have saved properly.

30 01 2014
b?

Love the game so far but I can’t seem to exit it. Esc doesn’t work, windows key and “close window” doesn’t work. The only way I can seem to exit it is by going to the task manager (ctrl + alt + del) and quitting out of it that way. I must be missing something. Any help?

30 01 2014

There is a menu at the very top that appears when you move your mouse up there. On the top right of the menu is the Exit option.

I love this! However, I teach ESL so I want to include some questions in my students’ native language for them to translate (Japanese), but it seems like only alphanumeric characters are supported. Other characters require the text file to be saved as Unicode rather than ANSI. Is there a possibility this will be supported in the future? Thanks!

4 03 2015
paralleldivergence

Sorry Maley. No plans at this stage to add other language support.

This is what I’ve been looking for! We are doing a SAT Word Bowl next week and I think the students would love the Harry Potter skin! I have a question though. We have 192 SAT words we’d like to cover and we plan to play about 8 games. Is it possible to randomize the questions so that students don’t get the same questions when they play another team?

Redox Sim

Hi, this is a fantastic game that I use to revise with my students.
I’ve recently upgraded my laptop to Windows 10, and the game stops playing all sounds and mp3s.
It’s the same issue on my desktop, so I know it’s not a problem that’s specific to my laptop, but an issue with using it on Windows 10.
Any advice on how I can overcome this?
Thanks in advance for the advice!

6 08 2016

Q: I have Windows 8 or 10. What do I need to make Stu’s Quiz Boxes work?
A: We have released a libraries fix for Windows 8 and 10 64-bit computers to allow QuizBoxes to run.

Please download the following program:

http://stuhasic.com/win8lib64/win8lib64setup.exe

You need to be logged onto your PC as an administrator, then right-click on the program you downloaded and choose Run as Administrator. A status bar will flash up on the screen, then disappear. When complete, try running QuizBoxes from the QuizBoxes folder. It should work fine.

Thank you so much for this amazing tool. I’m going to try this with my students here in Norway on Thursday. I’m excited already, because I think they will actually love it, even if they are students over 20 years old:-)

That’s great. Feel free to report back to let us know how it goes!
