The free download of Stu’s Quiz Boxes includes the ability to include images or photos on any or all question panels! Probably the most common request received from Quiz Boxes game makers around the world has been – “Please include photos in your next version” – so that’s exactly what I did.
With Stu’s Quiz Boxes, you can choose to have an image by itself as the question, or have an image with a text question beside it as shown below:

The inclusion of photos brings a whole new dimension to Stu’s Quiz Boxes. Here’s how you can create your own multimedia quiz:
1. You need to think about the type of questions you could ask that include a photo, image or diagram. Some examples include:
- A Movie Quiz (as described above)
- A “Parts” Identification Quiz
- Interpret that diagram
- Visual Puzzles Quiz
- A “Spot the Difference Quiz
2. As normal, put your 31 questions together into six categories with five questions in each (plus Quiz Boxes Breaker)
3. Type all your questions into a NEW Quiz File in the Quiz Boxes Question Editor
4. Save the new Quiz File into a folder of its own inside the quizzes folder, or elsewhere on your computer. Every JPG Quiz MUST be in its OWN folder! Name the folder appropriately, then open the folder and name your quiz appropriately.
5. Sizing your photos: Gather/make your appropriate image for each question. The images/photos must be prepared and named carefully. All images must be save in JPEG format. No other format is acceptable. Any image you use MUST have a MINIMUM height of 50 pixels and MAXIMUM height of 400 pixels. If your images are any taller than this, they will be automatically cropped to 400 pixels. The width of your images can vary from a minimum of 50 pixels to a maximum of 860 pixels. If you wish to include a text question with your image, the MAXIMUM width of your image should be 400 pixels. You should not type question text for any image greater than 400 pixels wide. For these wider images, just type a dot (.) for the question text. To assist with resizing and cropping your photos, I recommend the free and excellent Irfanview program for Windows.
6. Naming your photos: Rename each JPG file so that the first question ($200) in the first category is called J1-1.jpg, the second question in the first category is J1-2.jpg and so on until the last question ($1000) in the sixth category is called J6-5.jpg. The Quiz Boxes Breaker question image file must be called JFJ.jpg. In total, you should have 31 JPG files if you have an image with every question. Place all the needed JPG files into the same folder as the quiz (.txt) file.
7. If you’ve done this all correctly, run Quiz Boxes and test your JPG Quiz file by opening the quiz inside your newly created folder. All the images should just appear!

How do you “zip” a folder? You can use WinZip that you have to pay for, or you can use 7-Zip for free! You basically run the program and select the folder you created and it will make a single zip file out of that folder and all its contents. When people download it from the Quiz Boxes site, they just unzip it into their QuizBoxes\Quizzes folder and it will be available for their use!

Unfortunately, you can’t add an image to the answer page – I assumed it would be difficult as a contestant to respond with an image, so I didn’t include it. If there is a need for it, I could possibly add it to my future updates wishlist.
This IS a great program. Thanks for sharing. I can see how I could use a “picture” in the answer. I wanted to do a “match the people listed with the things listed” question. To make it look better I wanted to do lists. So I made an image in photoshop with the names listed on the left and the things that need to be matched to them on the right. It would be nice to put that same image, but with the people and things matched in the right order, in the answer. Of course, there is probably an easier way to do it.

Thank you for the quick response, the reason behind asking was that at a young age it is hard to answer the questions the way the real jeopardy works. This is why I have been using PP to ask question then they would give answers. Either way, you have done an incredible job at this beautiful software. Hi Olivia. OK, so you have your question file (the .txt file) in a folder of its own? And INSIDE that same folder you have your j1-1.jpg, j3-5.jpg etc files?
Then when you open the quiz and play it, are you saying the image doesn’t appear when you click the $200 button in Category 1 or the $1000 button in Category 3? Certainly should work if you ensure this has been done. Let me know if you are still stuck.
Hey Stu! I’m very close to finishing my first project. I’ve noticed something odd when I put an image onto a question space. The words next to it are in a BLACK, instead of WHITE like the rest of the questions and answers. Also, other quizzes that I have downloaded from your site that have pictures seem to be in the same format. Or is that just the way it supposed to be. Can you advise me? BTW, the pictures are 72 resolution and they show up great! Thanks for a great program! I’m really enjoying using it!

Yopu have some strange colour scheme setup in Windows. Right-click on the Desktop, go to Display Properties, Go to the Appearance tab and change colours to Windows Default and check the question panel again.

Another question: My laptop can send a video signal out to a second monitor. Is there a way to have the game show up on that second monitor, or will it only show on the primary monitor? I got it to work, but I had to make my laptop screen #2 and the external #1. Thanks Stu!

Yes, that’s the only way to do dual monitors Kevin. It expects to run on the primary monitor only. Glad you sorted the other problem.
Need picture help! I have done everything: put the .txt file inside its own folder, and included the pictures (named J1-1.jpg, J1-2.jpg, etc) inside the same folder….to no avail! I downloaded some other multimedia rounds and haven’t found any difference between my files and theirs…Help please!

Hi Micah. Thanks for sending your quiz folder. Your files were names J1-1.jpg.jpg / J1-2.jpg.jpg etc. You need to remove the extra .jpg in the names and all will be well.

I would like to know if there is anyway I can paste and image that I created in word to a question. I teach 3rd grade and we do a lot of dictionary work. I would love to put a picture of a dictionary entry. I don’t know how to create it as a jpg file. If not, can we add it to the wish list?
It’s very simple to save your image as a JPG Veronica.
Firstly, download and install Irfanview from http://irfanview.com – it’s completely free. It’s a simple photo viewer and editor.
Next, open Word, open your document with the image, right-click on the image and choose COPY. Now open Irfanview and press Ctrl-V to paste your image. It will appear in Irfanview. You need to resize it according to the instructions above. You can Crop it by drawing a box around the relevant parts of the picture and choosing Edit…Crop Selection. You can resize it specifically by choosing Image…Resize/Resample and spcifying the size you need.
In the end, when you’re happy with it, choose File…Save as… and set the file type as JPEG, name it Jx-y as appropriate for the category and question and put it in your folder where the question file is.
Hope that helps. MS Word is not a photo editor and importing from Word is not an option.

Hi I’m trying to add pictures to my questions. And when I click on them in the program it shows Runtime error ‘6’ overflow. I’ve edited the pics and it keeps doing that. Anything I should look at?

What do you mean when you say “when I click on them”? You mean when you click on the image? Or when you click on the box that have the question with the image behind it?
What did you name the image file exactly? Is the image file a JPG image or is it some other type and you renamed it as JPG (that’s not a good idea).
Can you test it on another PC? Have never seen this error with the program.
It occurs when I have started the program and when I click on the quiz box. So the clue which is a picture clue it shows that error.
I’ve been running it from my portable hard drive. It works now on my desktop. But when I was using a laptop it didn’t work.

I’ve put in all of my images, and they come up just fine. The problem is that some of the labels for the images show up right beside the image. My images are the height you specified but they seem to not be wide enough to cover the j1-1.jpg label. I’ve tried to widen the images but then they just look skewed. What have people tried in the past? I was thinking that if I could just centre the images on the page, this would solve the matter.

Hello. I have two questions, but one of them was already answered in a discussion pertaining to a polynomial quiz (exponents and math symbols). It sounds like inputting math symbols is a pretty difficult task. Here’s my other question: Have you made the switch yet to allow the use images in the answers? As a math teacher, it would be HUGELY useful to be able to screenshot a Notebook or Word page and use it as an answer.

I update QuizBoxes about once per year. The next release is not due until the second half of 2010. At that stage, I’ll aim to include images for answers. But I’m also looking to allow for different fonts to be used for questions which may help your needs.
Now if I had a budget for developing the software, I might be able to update it more regularly, but it’s free to the 140,000+ users that have downloaded it – and actually costs me money to develop and share with the world. 🙂

I am eagerly awaiting the addition of more math-friendly fonts. Word’s built-in equation editor uses cambria math, and having the ability to use that font would be an educational godsend. Hi Tomiet. The software can do everything this website say it does, and nothing it doesn’t say. Powerpoint costs a fair bit of money last time I looked. 🙂
And powerpoint also costs a fair amount of time… since 2003 and 2007 is so different (and 2010 is here already) – and add to that working in an environment where the MSOffice is in a foreign language and I don’t understand it. Your program will be a real time-saver, Stu, and also a stress-reducer indeed.

Help! Having trouble with the images. I’ve saved them properly in the same folder as the questions text file. I start to play the game and all questions work properly except the ones that should have an image. When I click on the question box (ie: 200 amount) I get an error message that says — Run-time error ‘429’ ActiveX component can’t create object.
I read that someone else had a fairly similar problem but resolved it by running the game on the desktop instead of a laptop. I’m running it on my laptop and off a USB stick. But that shouldn’t matter should it? Do I have to do something with my ActiveX settings?? (In fact I may not have that on my laptop at all). Help!!

you were quite right the problem is seeing them to see what they are called. Now I have the problem of fitting in the photo and text, how do I get the text to just go down one side please?
You need to read point 5 above. To include text to the right of your image, the image must not be any wider than 400 pixels.
Hey, wonderful software. I teach HS math so am anxiously awaiting the ability to put images/math equation editor or such into the answer as is the teacher in the other post. I have a question…. is there any way to keep the question on the screen when the answer is revealed?? With more complecated questions, it would be nice to still view the question as the answer is checked. Again, thanks for a wonderful, easy to use, motivator for my classroom.

Discovered your game six months ago and finally got around to creating quiz. Am using it to teach/review WHMIS and forklift training at work. Love the program and just read through how to insert images. Instructions worked perfectly and am actually looking forward to this week’s training and the feedback from it. Hi Stu, I love your program. I teach English as a foreign language and have used Quiz Boxes a few times without any problems (at least that I couldn’t resolve).
I’m making my first image-based quiz and I’ve run into a hurdle.
I’ve followed all the instructions; that is to say I made a seperate folder for the quiz, sized all the images within the pixel requirements – they’re 710×400, saved all the images as JPG and titled them J5-1 through to J5-5 (because I’m only using it for one category) which in theory should make them J5-1.jpg, etc. (didn’t want to fall for the double .jpg thing) but when I load the quiz and play it, if I click on one of the questions that has an image I get a pop-up saying “Run-time error ‘6’: Overflow” and the program closes. All the other text-based questions work fine. What have I done wrong?

Hi, Stu. I’m getting the same run-time error as Paul. “Run-time error ‘6’: overflow”. Then, the program shuts down. This error occurred when clicking a box with a jpg image either in my own created game or the downloaded “Audio Visual Quiz” from your site. There is no error with text boxes.
I searched your site, but I couldn’t find an answer. I googled “Stu’s Quiz Boxes” and “run-time error”, but I couldn’t find an answer. Searching “run-time error 6” gave me instructions to solve this, apparently, Visual Basic problem. I used Ccleaner to clean my computer of junk. I used Windows Update to update my computer. This hasn’t fixed the problem.
My computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise edition. I tried this program also on another Windows 7 computer, but I experienced the same error. I just installed System Information for Windows (SIW), so if there is anything I could send you from that, let me know.

My operating system is Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit. It is a Japanese version of the operating system, though the English language pack is installed, and it seems to work just like the main English version.
I believe I have downloaded and tried the http://quizboxes.com/2008/09/22/audio-visual-trivia-quiz/ . It is currently on my USB in a folder marked “Audio Visual Quiz”. Neither that quiz nor one I made myself can load images without getting the run-time error. When I press the point button to connect to the question, the run-time error pops up and the program closes.
Once I get home (where I can access mediafire), I will download and try the quiz again to check I have the right one.
A colleague says it may be an ActiveX problem or incompatibility with Visual Basic. When I have more time, I’ll shut down other programs and processes and keep trying the quiz.
Hey Stu, I downloaded and ran the audio visual quiz from the link. It wouldn’t work. I also downloaded the quiz boxes program again just in case my first download was incomplete. I ran it this time from my desktop (rather than the USB). Nope. The program has no problem running text quizes, but I can’t get it to run pictures. I’ll keep thinking about it. Thanks.
My working theory on this problem is just that my OS is Japanese. If anyone else with a non-US version of Windows experiences the same problem, I would love to hear about it. Anyway… here is a short discussion on the problem.
http://okwave.jp/qa/q6546725.html . It was suggested that the error forms because of differences in the US and Japanese VB Runtime environments. I don’t really know what that means, though, other than that the code is probably different.
Yup it’s the Japanese local setting. The quick fix is to change your Local to English(united states). Control panel>Region>Administrative>Change system local>English (United States)
Hey stu, i love your sotfware but i have problems with pictures. Everytime i tried to put pictures in my questions something pops up saying “Run-time error ’6′: Overflow or “Run-time error ’5′: Overflow. Please help me.
This problem has (finally) been confirmed and relates to the format of the JPEG files. Please email me – stu_hasic@yahoo.com – as an attachment one of your jpeg files that gives you this error. I’ll test it, fix it and send it back to you with instructions for fixing the rest you are having trouble with. Also tell me in your email where the jogs came from and what program you used to do anything to it.

Hmmmm. Can you replicate the problem on more than one computer? Copy the whole Quizboxes folder to a USB stick and try in another PC. So far I only know of 4 people who have reported this problem, and the only way I have replicated it is when one of them emailed me some suspect image files. What Windows are you running?

All I can guess is you have some other program running which is conflicting with it. If it works in Safe Mode, then that would confirm it. Other than that, I’m at a loss. For every one PC where this error is occurring, there are many thousand where it isn’t.
if your question barely fits, and you add a picture, will some get cut off? just Wondering. Thx
Hi Christian. The question font is smaller when you include an image (see the iPod image above to see). You should be able to fit about the same as a normal question without an image, but it may be a little less, in which case, you’ll have to abbreviate your question a bit.
I was getting the “Runtime Error 6” issue as well. I downloaded Irfanview to check the dimensions of my images. It turns out I had captured the images on my Mac (*.png screenshots) and tried to change the extensions to *.jpg. When I opened in Irfanview through VMware Fusion on my Mac, I found out the images were in fact NOT *.jpg. Using Irfanview, I converted all of the images to *.jpg and all of the clues now open successfully.
Great find! Thanks Jeff. The software expects that the file is actually a jpg file, not a renamed other format image file. The error makes sense now.

In the same folder where your question file is, you have placed some jpg files. Delete them, or move your question file to another folder that contains no jpgs.

Hi Stu. Is there any chance that you will add the ability to use images as answers? I am a high school teacher, and I am using Quiz Boxes in my math classes. I LOVE the benefits that it is providing to my students. I have gotten really good at creating images for the questions. However, the lack of being able to use images as answers prevents me from using Quiz Boxes in 90% of the situations when I would otherwise want to. Thanks in advance!

Have to say I love using this program so far. A friend wanted to run a Jeopardy like game for her annual banquet for her clients and students at a horse stable. I’m her tech person and this seems like a perfect fit for her needs. Once we have the quiz set up and ready to go, I will try to make sure and upload it to share it here.
Just wanted to say add my vote to having pictures in the answers–some of the questions she came up with were going to lead to a picture of a few favorite horses at the stables. I let her know it wasn’t possible at this time. She is so happy I found this site and program and cannot wait to play the game at her upcoming banquet.

Hi Christian. In point 6 above, it clearly says for an image file in the final question that the file needs to be called JFJ.jpg – similarly for audio, it needs to be called JFJ.mp3.

I also got the pixel to 400 but when i tried to run it. a pop up comes out saying “Run-time error ‘5’: Invalid procedure call or argument”. Please help

I am running this on Windows 8 64 bit. I ran it a year ago on the same type of computer with little or no problem. Now I am getting invalid procedure error while using the audio visual quiz that came with it.

You need to be logged onto your PC as an administrator, then right-click on the program you downloaded and choose Run as Administrator. A status bar will flash up on the screen, then disappear. When complete, try running QuizBoxes from the QuizBoxes folder. It should work fine.
love your work, but sadly i am having the same problems as some.. the runtime error 6 overflow… i am using my win-7 64 desktop and used the sample picture that comes with windows 7 and just changed the name to “1-1” please help, thank you

This issue is usually related to the format of the jpg file. Open the file in Paint or some other photo editor tool and re-save it at a JPG file.
